Message on occasion of "Wake Up" Event, Skopje, 29th May, 2006 It's a great pleasure to warmly welcome the non-governmental organisation "Wake Up". This organisation is an inspiring example of citizens coming together to promote tolerance and a greater civic spirit among the people of Skopje. The message of rejection of violence and promotion of social justice is one which must reverberate across the land from community to community, from house to house. "Wake Up" is about dialogue, about creating a climate of trust between and within the many communities of this diverse city. By giving a message of hope and determination to the younger generation, it is showing the way forward. It is this message that will replace the men of violence by those with a sense of pride in their community. The European Union salutes the pioneering spirit reflected in the goals of "Wake Up". It is this spirit that will guide the people of Skopje, especially the younger generation, in their quest for a better quality of life and a more secure environment. Erwan Fouere
